At the height of the Cold War, writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika embark on a tour across a ruined Germany to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. As they make their appearances at conferences, parties, and private engagements, the history of their setting colours the entire purpose of the trip, and family, love, and allegiances take the centre stage.
