Moulin Rouge is the final film of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy. The musical romantic masterpiece became the first Australian production to open the Cannes Film Festival in 2001 and was nominated for eight Oscars, winning two. Luhrmann's original jukebox musical - a musical that uses popular songs instead of original ones - brought life back to movie musicals, and became a box office smash hit!
Christian, an English writer, travels to Paris to join the Bohemian revolution. He visits the city's biggest night club, Moulin Rouge, and falls in love with its star performer and courtesan, Satine.
The Red Curtain Trilogy do not form a trilogy in the traditional sense, rather, Luhrmann said that the three films follow a specific style of filmmaking. Each film incorporates a recurring theatrical motif: dance in the first (Strictly Ballroom), poetry and language in the second (Romeo + Juliet), and song in the third (Moulin Rouge).
